Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has started equipping traffic officers with body-worn cameras in a bid to improve transparency, cut down on corruption, and make policing more efficient.
ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the cameras have been deployed across all provinces, and officers are currently being trained on how to use them properly. He said:
“Yes, the process has started. We have distributed the cameras to all the provinces, and it’s the prerogative of the Officer Commanding in each province to determine how those cameras will be distributed within their province.
“I must emphasise, though, that training is ongoing; there is no specific group of officers that will use these cameras, so the process of training is still ongoing.”
Police, in partnership with the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ), have also introduced breathalysers and speed cameras on major highways to help reduce drunken driving and speeding ahead of the festive season, when road accidents typically rise.
