ZRP Warns Drivers Against Confrontations With Officers

Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has urged motorists to cooperate when stopped or flagged down for traffic offences.

The call follows the circulation of a video on social media showing a motorist arguing with police officers after they allegedly took his car keys.

The footage, which appears to have been recorded by a passing motorist, shows a heavily built man pushing and shoving with a group of officers beside a white vehicle parked at the roadside.

In a statement, ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said there was no need for drivers to be confrontational, issue threats, or claim they would fight or shoot police officers in an attempt to gain public sympathy. He said:

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police has taken note of a video circulating on social media, especially on Crime Watch’s X handle, involving a confrontation between a driver and police officers.

“The Police advises Zimbabweans that it is in the interest of law and order for all motorists to comply when stopped or flagged down by the Police for committing traffic offences.

“There is no need for drivers to be confrontational, issue threats to fight or shoot police officers while seeking public sympathy. Drivers are implored to lead by example on the roads.

“All motorists should contribute towards road safety by not stopping vehicles at undesignated points, pirating and picking passengers on the centre and verges of the road, driving a vehicle whilst drinking alcohol and going through red traffic lights or oncoming traffic.

“On the other hand, the Zimbabwe Republic Police is committed to ensuring that all officers deployed on traffic enforcement perform their duties professionally and in line with set standards.

“If any member of the public is aggrieved, there are formal complaint channels available.

“The public should feel free to contact the National Complaints Desk on (0242) 703631 or WhatsApp on 0712 800 197 or report at any nearest Police Station.”
