Africa-Press – Angola. Former President José Eduardo dos Santos left his mark not only in Angola for the churches, but for the world, said Emílio de Carvalho, the first bishop of the United Methodist Church in the country.

Emílio de Carvalho, who was speaking , considered fair all the tributes paid to José Eduardo dos Santos, who should be remembered as a humble man who dedicated himself to Independence and the defense of Angola’s sovereignty.

“It’s news that makes the Angolan family and particularly yours very sad. We feel completely broken by the news. He was in Spain twice. We don’t think his health condition has deteriorated. so early. In other words, a person aged 79 could live much longer. We had hope, but diseases arrive unexpectedly”, he lamented.

He stressed that the historical dimension of former President José Eduardo dos Santos for the country is great and there must be few people in Angola who did not admire and admire his path as a political leader.

“He dedicated his life to the people, especially the most disadvantaged people. I could say other words, but they are scarce for the dimension of José Eduardo dos Santos for what he did. We will miss his absence immensely”, continued Emílio de Carvalho .

He recalled that, despite Angola being a secular country, the churches have always enjoyed the privileges of the Presidency of the Republic. Religious legality in practice in the country in the broadest aspects had the ex-President’s complete understanding of the meaning of religion, as an integral part of the culture of the peoples.

The churches, he continued, are grateful for the way they were treated under the Law and for their own personal experience with religion in Angola: “There is not a single religious leader who can complain about José Eduardo dos Santos. contribution to the growth of churches throughout the national territory”.
