Africa-Press – Angola. The lack of an up-to-date bibliographic service in the Provincial Library is discouraging the affluence of the public to that institution.
In a round carried out by a reporting team of this daily, it was noted that users claim that they do not visit the establishment often because the works in it do not report recent knowledge of science and technology.
Since its creation, in 1998, the bibliographic collection consists mainly of half a dozen scientific books, Angolan and universal history, literature and politics, but there is no academic book.
This situation is of particular concern to students and teachers from different educational establishments who do not find space for bibliographic consultations.
Student João de Barros, a third-year student at the Middle Health Institute (IMS) in Ndalatando, said that the Provincial Library is weak, due to the lack of up-to-date consultation material. He said he had gone there several times looking for school subjects, but he was never successful.
For Nazaré Calombe, a finalist at the Instituto Medio de Educação, at the “Santa Maria Goretti” missionary school, the books that the Library has have nothing to do with the general culture of today. The 21-year-old student said that the situation has been addressed with the use of the cell phone, with which he searches, on the Google platform, on almost everything he needs.
“I went from home to the library several times looking for research manuals to help me with the countless difficulties that we students have had in this nature, but the attempts were not successful; that’s why I gave up on going back there”, he pointed out.
Dumilde Sebastião Conde, also a finalist, but from the “Comandante Benedito” High School of Education, went further, considering that there was a lack of interest on the part of similar authorities.
“We are in a time of development in all fields of social, cultural and economic life. For a young student, it is very important that they relate to up-to-date scientific material”, underlined the 23-year-old student, who appealed for a change in the current framework. .
Gastão Francisco, professor of Biology at the third level of education, confirmed that all the research works related to his area requested from the students, have hardly been developed, due to the fact that the only public place for research does not have instruments for this purpose, which has caused a lack of knowledge on the part of the student body.
A total of 30 respondents, including students, teachers, civil servants and individuals, all asked the Government to increase the quantity and quality of books, to minimize the difficulties of the reading public.
In addition to the lack of books, especially didactic material for the I and II cycles, the space where the Provincial Library of Cuanza-Norte works is also small.
Inhibition Of Reading Habit
The head of the Provincial Department of Culture of Cuanza-Norte, Rosa Francisco, considered that the lack of up-to-date consultation material inhibits the habit of reading.
That official said that it was “necessary and urgent” to re-equip the Provincial Library with consultation furniture, aiming to stimulate a taste for reading and research on the part of all citizens.
For Rosa Francisco, the introduction of a digital library would solve all the difficulties in this aspect. According to him, the lack of physical books could be minimized with research via the Internet, but he regretted the fact that the lack of financial availability was preventing the materialization of the project to create a digital library.
“We have been seeing the opening of media libraries in some provices; We hope that, at any moment, we will also be contemplated with a project of this dimension”, said the person responsible for Culture in Cuanza-Norte.
