Africa-Press – Angola. The ex-President of Cape Verde said, in Menongue, Cuando Cubango province, that the General Elections that Angola will hold on 24 August are a clear demonstration of the consolidation of the democratic process, strengthening of unity and national reconciliation among Angolans.
Jorge Carlos Fonseca, speaking to the press on Tuesday, after leaving a courtesy meeting with the governor of Cuando Cubango, José Martins, wished the Angolans that the election would take place in a climate of peace and perfect normality, according to the principles governing modern democracies.
He stressed that elections are an integral part of democracy which is pluralist, which implies the requirement of holding regular elections and that they must be accepted as a normal phenomenon, adapted to the reality of Angola, for the prosperity and development of citizens.
“It is necessary that there is no rush in holding elections, as there are always advances and setbacks. In this path, it is necessary to be very patient so that, when called, the elections can take place smoothly, in an orderly, free and fair way”, defended.
Carlos Fonseca, who will direct the mission of electoral observers of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP), stressed that the development of a given country depends on peace, democracy, political and institutional stability, through rules agreed by all and for all. .
The governor of Cuando Cubango province stressed that Angola is a democratic country governed by law, where democracy and elections have great significance in the lives of citizens. To Angolans, José Martins appealed to go to polling stations with civility, so that the upcoming electoral process takes place in a good atmosphere.
He said it was necessary for all voters to make the decision to flock to the polling stations en masse to enforce the will of Angolans in choosing the new rulers. José Martins, who is also the MPLA’s first provincial secretary, said that his party wants the elections to become a great party for democracy.
Consolidation Of Democracy
During his stay of a few hours in Menongue, the former Cape Verdean president gave a master class on “The participation of young people in the consolidation of the democratic process in Africa”, promoted by the Piedoso Foundation, in partnership with the Instituto Superior Politécnico Privado de Menongue (ISPPM).
Jorge Carlos Fonseca said that Africans have made considerable progress towards the Africa Development Agenda until 2063, whose project is very ambitious and, if implemented, the continent will soon be able to rub shoulders with other global blocs, in the most varied domains.
If the Africa Agenda for 2063 materializes, he said, the continent could become increasingly free and democratic, see the fundamental rights and prosperity of citizens strengthened. He stressed that, for this, it is necessary to work continuously to promote peace, democracies and end the internal conflicts that still affect a large number of countries.
He defended that young Africans should be more ambitious with their own countries, seeking to obtain knowledge in the most varied areas, so that the continent can reach enviable levels, in terms of its development and political and social stability.
According to the university professor, for any country to become independent, democratic and freedom of the press to develop, it is necessary that young people, as the driving force of society, use their creative powers and commit to the socio-economic well-being of all citizens.
He said that young people must be proactive, capable of having their own constructive initiatives that help the country to develop in the short term.
“Nowadays, it is not possible to expect the State to give jobs to all young people; it is impossible. They must invent themselves, work, organize events in the most varied fields of activities and be entrepreneurs”, he encouraged.
He also considered that local authorities, which consist of decentralizing the powers of government officials, are one of the most important ways to strengthen democracy in a given country. Carlos Fonseca said that it is with the local authorities that the people exercise power and determine their future, without the direct intervention of the government.
