Africa-Press – Angola. A beach handball marathon and a tournament for beginners are part of the sports movement in favor of the 109th anniversary of the city of Lobito, to be celebrated on the 2nd of September.
According to the municipal director of Youth and Sports, Serafim Domingos, who was speaking to ANGOP this Monday, in addition to this modality, a judo tournament and a women’s football tournament are also scheduled.
“The Amigos da Caminhada, lovers of physical exercise on the city’s avenues, will travel from the entrance of the Luz neighborhood to Ponta da Restinga, with the participation of a team from the province of Huambo, as part of the fraternization that has already been usual between those two cities.
Asked about the crossing of Lobito Bay, which over the years has been the most attractive activity on this occasion, Serafim Domingos said that this year it was not selected due to limitations, due to the elections on 24 August.
According to him, some companies were inhibited from sponsoring activities, so the local administration was left with only institutional support, thanking the goodwill of individual people who were willing to help in something.
In the social sphere, the solemn act, gastronomy, a culture, arts and services fair, gospel music festival and a varied music show are planned, with the participation of several local musicians and also from Luanda.
Lobito was elevated to the category of city on September 2, 1903.
It is one of the ten municipalities in the province of Benguela, with a territorial extension of two thousand and 700 square kilometers. It has two communes, namely Canjala and Egipto Praia, and an estimated population of 500 thousand inhabitants, according to data from the local administration.
