The Minister of Health, Sílvia Lutucuta, expressed her concern on Thursday(1) with the increase in cases of meningitis in health units in the province of Huambo, having underlined that, only in the month of August of the current year, there were 24 occurrences were recorded, with a higher incidence in adolescents and children under 15 years of age.
Sílvia Lutucuta, who has been on a working visit to the Planalto Central region since yesterday to assess the epidemiological situation in the region and the functioning of the health units, said that the management of the General Hospital of Huambo, despite being able to attend patients with meningitis, is concerned about the emergence of new cases. “In recent times, we have seen an increase in cases of meningitis in children and adolescents under 15 years old, a fact that has been worrying the health authorities of the province”.
He added that the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Provincial Government, is working to stop the increase in cases of the disease, having promised, within days, a vaccination campaign that will cover the entire territory of Huambo province.
The Minister of Health advised parents to immediately go to hospitals whenever they notice a symptom of meningitis in their children, to prevent the child from dying or the disease causing any physical weakness.
He explained that the most common symptoms of the disease are severe headaches, high fever, mental confusion, altered level of consciousness, vomiting and intolerance to light or loud sounds. During her working visit to the province of Huambo, the Minister of Health will learn about the functioning of the municipal hospitals of Cambiote (outskirts of the city), of Caála, of the General Hospital of Huambo, as well as of the health centers of the Centralities of Lossambo and Caála.
