AN votes against UNITA request on teachers' strike

Africa-Press – Angola. The plenary of the National Assembly (AN) voted, this Thursday, against a request from the UNITA Parliamentary Group, which intended to discuss the situation of the teachers’ strike in the hemicycle.

UNITA’s request had 80 votes in favour, 114 against and two abstentions, during the 1st Extraordinary Plenary Meeting, referring to the 1st Legislative Session of the V Legislature of the National Assembly.

Deputy Maricel Capama, from the MPLA, said that her party rejected the UNITA document on the teachers’ strike because she believes that, while the negotiating round is in progress to find the common denominator of the points presented in the teachers’ union claim booklet , Parliament must not interfere in the process.

“The supervising ministry is negotiating. We think that we, the deputies, do not have to interfere when the negotiation process is still underway”, he defended.

On his turn, the leader of the UNITA parliamentary group, Liberty Chiaka, regretted the position of the MPLA, noting that his party intended, with this debate, to convey a message of solidarity to teachers, students and all personnel linked to the system of education and teaching.

“We proposed (…) to discuss a situation that is urgent and that has implications from a political, social, economic and even psychological point of view”, he maintained.
