Africa-Press – Angola. The members of the Community Consultation Council, in the province of Cuanza Norte, defended yesterday, Thursday, in Ndalatando, capital of the province, the maintenance of the names of some localities in the new proposal of Political-Administrative Division of the country, to preserve the region’s history.
According to the participants of the 2nd extraordinary meeting of this Government consultation body, the proposal to change the names of many locations could pinch or compromise some important elements of the history of each community and the country, which could confuse future generations.
For the chief Constantino da Silva, the proposal for the new administrative division must preserve or even return to the nomenclature that goes against the local languages, traditions, uses and customs of the peoples of each region, in the sense that its inhabitants see themselves in the circumscriptions in which they live. were born and live.
João Manuel, another traditional authority, defended the maintenance of the borders of the current communities that will be elevated to municipalities, to safeguard conflicts of interests and land between villagers.
The second secretary of UNITA in Cuanza Norte, Lito Miguel, thinks that the lack of infrastructure, basic social services and other conditions inherent to the life of companions does not allow the expansion of districts at the municipal level.
For the second provincial secretary of the MPLA, Félix Cutaba, the proposal for the political-administrative division of the country should not be seen or confused with the realization of local authorities, but rather an opportunity for the development of the country, due to the fact that the current communes, which will be elevated to the category of municipalities, not having their own budget for the maintenance of their services.
The meeting was chaired by the governor of the province, Pedro Makita Armando Júlia, who urged participants to contribute with solid ideas for improving the proposals, in order to satisfy the needs of the entire population in the province.
The country’s new political-administrative proposal provides for the division of the provinces of Moxico and Cuando Cubango, making 20 territories at provincial level, to the detriment of the current 18, and the elevation of communes and districts to municipalities, with the country expected to have 581 municipalities, instead of the 164 existing now.
For the province of Cuanza Norte, 31 municipalities are planned, against the current ten.
