Ombudsman resolves 14 complaints from citizens in Cuando Cubango

Africa-Press – Angola. Fourteen different complaints were resolved by the Ombudsman Service in Cuando Cubango, in seven months, since its institutionalization.

The acts result from 246 hearings granted to national and foreign citizens.

The data were disclosed Friday, in Menongue, by the provincial head of the ombudsman, Domingos Tchilemo, in statements to the press, on the sidelines of a lecture under the motto “The role of the ombudsman in defending citizens in situations of vulnerability”, within the framework of December 10, the day of celebrations of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The person in charge informed that the hearings were made to the inmates of the Penitentiary Service of Menongue (civilian) and of the command of the V Infantry Division (Military), also in Menongue, whose detentions were over 90 days, contrary to the law.

Domingos Tchilemo recognized that there are cases of procedural delays, in matters of optional and mandatory inventories, but which have deserved constant presence of the ombudsman, for their due solution and, ultimately, forwarded to higher instances of the ombudsman.

He said that, in case of delay, 34 cases are already accounted for in seven months, some archived and others forwarded to the central ombudsman for the competent areas, at a time when there has been a notable presence of complaints of many cases at the headquarters of the body, in Menongue.

He pointed to the lack of transport to consult other citizens and prisoners inside Cuando Cubango as the main difficulties.

In turn, the provincial director of the Provincial Education Office, Inácio José Samba, representing the governor, praised the institution’s initiative, which has the mission of restoring legality to citizens who feel wronged by the law.

He stressed that the ombudsman performs its functions based on the internal legislation in force in the treaties, conventions and other international instruments to which Angola is a party, in terms of rights, freedoms and fundamental guarantees.
