Overcrowding at Nkiende jail worries ombudsman

Africa-Press – Angola. The deputy ombudsman, Aguinaldo Guedes Cristóvão, appeared this Saturday in Mbanza Kongo, province of Zaire, concerned about the high number of inmates in the Nkiende prison unit.

Taking stock of his three-day visit to Zaire, the official added that in addition to overcrowding, the aforementioned prison infrastructure is in a serious state of degradation, in need of urgent rehabilitation.

“Overcrowding in the Nkiende prison is 30 percent”, said the magistrate, defending the expansion or construction of another prison unit.

Aguinaldo Guedes Cristóvão also defended the need to implement professional training courses in arts and crafts in the Nkiende chain for the benefit of the penal population.

He said he had received guarantees from the Provincial Government that the construction of a new prison facility for the municipality of Mbanza Kongo will be analyzed and discussed in the 2023 budget.

During his stay in Mbanza Kongo, the assistant ombudsman consulted individual and collective entities, as well as verified the operation of some bodies involved in the administration of justice.

Built in 2010, the Nkiende jail, in the commune with the same name, is located 30 kilometers from the city of Mbanza Kongo and was designed to house 250 inmates.
