Uíge Province records increase in fish catches

Africa-Press – Angola. Eighty tonnes of fish (cacussos, catfish and mabanga) were caught this year in Uíge province, in 113 aquaculture projects.

Speaking to press, on Thursday, the head of the Department of Fisheries in Uíge, José Kupessa, explained that compared to the previous period, there was an increase of another ton in the production of tilapia.

The official said that this year, the number of aquaculture projects rose to 113 projects, against 73 in 2021.

He informed that the inclusion of aquaculture projects in the Program to Combat Hunger and Poverty and the creation of new tanks to reinforce the production of tilapia, allowed the increase of the production of tilapia fish.

Regarding artisanal fishing, he indicated that 47 associations and eight cooperatives also recorded an increase in catches this year, having reached 76 tons of different fish, against 69 tons in the same period before 2021.

The Department of Fisheries in Uíge controls 1,495 fishermen.
