Africa-Press – Angola. The work “The Emanuel do Dôndi Seminar: Impact on Evangelization and Extension of Congregationalism in Angola”, which portrays the course of the institution, between 1947 and 2022, was presented this Friday in the city of Huambo.

The book, authored by the dean of the institution, reverend Adelaide Catanha, addresses, in 144 pages and III chapters, focusing on the historical and theological path of the Emanuel do Dôndi Seminar, implemented together with the Evangelical Mission of the same name, in the municipality of Cachiungo , province of Huambo.

The sale and autograph session, held at the Pastorado Sede Missão Académico temple, was attended by the governor of Huambo province, Lotti Nolika, deputy Dolina Nassocópia Miguel Tchinhama, the provincial secretary of the Evangelical Congregational Church in Angola (IECA), reverend Gilberto Ndunduma, priests, theology students and other guests.

On the occasion, the author said it was a broad work, which addresses, in three chapters, the stages of implementation of the Emanuel do Dôndi Seminar, the theological line of the institution and its impact on evangelization and the extension of congregationalism in Angola.

He referred that the book also narrates the role of the institution that, on October 15, 1957, opened the doors of Ecumenism in Angola, in an initiative of the then rector, Reverend Omar Hartzler in 1949.

In turn, the IECA secretary in Huambo province, reverend Gilberto Jamba Ndunduma, said that the work will make a significant contribution both to the life of the church and to the theological and social formation of current and future generations, taking into account its rich content.

He encouraged the other priests of the church, in particular, the teachers of the Emanuel do Dôndi Seminar to follow the same path, with the publication of works that praise the importance of the institution, which involves the congregational collective memory.

On behalf of the Provincial Government of Huambo, the director of the Culture, Tourism, Youth and Sports office, Jeremias Piedade Chissanga, referred that the papal church of the Evangelical Mission of Dondi, recently elevated to National Historical-Cultural Heritage, continues to play a role quite preponderant in the ecclesiastical and social formation of citizens throughout the country.


Characterization of the Seminar

Founded in 1947, with the bishop emeritus of the United Methodist Church, Emílio de Carvalho, as one of the rectors in the past, the institution trains mid-level theologians for four years.

Among the workers, in addition to the IECA, are the Methodist Unity of Angola, Pentecostal churches and other religious denominations, within the existing institutional partnership in the field of training of theologians.

The seminary, whose first rector was the reverend Raph Collins, studied the emeritus general secretaries of the IECA, the reverends Henriques Etaungo Daniel, Júlio Francisco, José Belo Chipenda, Augusto Chipesse and the current André Cangovi Eurico, in addition to the general secretary of the Council of Christian Churches in Angola (CICA), Reverend Deolinda Dorcas Zola Teca.

Author’s biographical summary

Born on July 4, 1953, in the municipality of Andulo, province of Bié, Pastor Adelaide Catanha was ordained to the pastoral priesthood in 1978 by the Evangelical Congregational Church in Angola (IECA).

Mother of four children and married to Fernando Catanha, who is also an IECA pastor, she has two degrees in English Linguistics and Psychology Teaching, from the Instituto Superior de Ciências da Educação at Universidade Agostinho Neto.

He has a master’s degree in Clinical Psychopedagogy, from the University of Higher Studies University, in Barcelona (Spain) and University of Lyon.

Reverend Adelaide Catanha holds a PhD in Psychopedagogy from the Atlantic International University in Honolulu, Hawaii, Miam, in the United States of America.

A member of the Ministry of Education, in addition to being rector of the Emanuel do Dôndi Seminary, she has already exercised, among various functions, that of treasurer and teacher at the same institution, director of the department of Christian Education in the cities of Lobito and Benguela, as well as pastor in several IECA temples in the province of Huambo.
