Africa-Press – Angola. Sixty thousand hectares of land have been identified, in Lunda Sul, for the start of the National Plan for the Promotion of Grain Production (PLANAGRAN), in 2024.

the spaces are located in the municipalities of Saurimo and Muconda, in the province of Lunda Sul, in the east of the country.

PLANAGRÃO, an initiative of the Angolan Executive, will be developed in the provinces of Moxico, Lunda Norte, Lunda Sul and Cuando Cubango, in a total area of two million hectares.

Each province will benefit from 500,000 hectares, financed by the Development Bank of Angola (BDA), whose global value is estimated at 1.6 billion kwanzas.

The Secretary of State for the Economy, Ivan dos Santos, who ended, this Saturday, a two-day visit to Lunda Sul, verified the conditions of the areas chosen for the implementation of the PLANAGRÃO, having specified that of the identified hectares 35 thousand belong to the commune of the Muriege where the cereals will be grown.

Another 25,000 hectares are located in the town of Peso-Velho, commune of Mona Quimbundo, exclusively for the production of rice, given the history of the town in the cultivation of this cereal.

According to the official, the chosen areas offer favorable conditions for the cultivation of rice, corn, soybeans and beans, with a considerable water potential, which will serve to launch Planagrão, offering job opportunities to young people, especially recent graduates.

He explained that the Planagrão has two components, the first being related to infrastructure (roads, energy and water) and the other linked to financing the private sector which will be operated by the BDA.

He added that the private sector would be in charge of bringing the equipment to materialize the project.

As for access to the referred places, he said they are fine, which will help to save resources in this regard, since they are interconnected with National Roads (EN), which will facilitate the flow of cultivated products.

He recommended the municipal administrations to encourage young people to participate in the project, to boost the cultivation of these cereals in the country, thus promoting economic development.

On his turn, the chief of the locality of Samdembue (Mona-Quimbundo), Francisco Yambo, stated that Peso-Velho was the granary of rice production in the Eastern region and, admitting that, with this plan, the cultivation of rice in large scale will be a reality, to the satisfaction of the population.
