Africa-Press – Angola. The provincial director of the Penitentiary Service in Uíge, sub-commissioner Dulcínio Silvestre, reaffirmed Monday, the focus on academic and professional training of the staff, for better improvement of new information techniques and maintenance of prison security.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the commemorations of March 20, the day of the foundation of the Penitentiary Service, he explained that, in the year 2022, 14 staff were trained at the Institute of Penitentiary Sciences, in Luanda, others were trained in Law and Psychology.

In the act that took place under the motto “Penitentiary Service 44 firm years in the social reintegration of the inmate, consolidating the Penitentiary production”, the official also spoke of the commitment to the re-education, rehabilitation and literacy of the inmates.

As an example, he explained that 105 inmates attended, in 2022, literacy modules 1, 2 and 3, and another 13 took a computer course from a user perspective.

To increase the number of trained inmates, Dulcínio Silvestre advocates the construction of an arts and crafts pavilion in the Kindoki prison facilities, located in the municipality of Negage, as well as the availability of more agricultural materials.

He added that in the first agricultural production (2022/2023 agricultural season) 28,261 kilograms of various products were harvested, with emphasis on sweet potatoes, corn, cabbage, kale, tomatoes, eggplant and other crops.

At the end of the act, the provincial delegate of the Ministry of the Interior in Uíge, commissioner Monteiro dos Santos, highlighted the performance of the local Penitentiary Service in the re-education, rehabilitation and integration of inmates into society.

Even so, the official appealed to the Penitentiary Service to redouble the surveillance and control of prisoners, as well as to safeguard their rights.

The Penitentiary Service in Uíge controls 1,212 prisoners, of which 666 are convicted and 556 are detained.
