Africa-Press – Angola. Six of the 363 inmates interned in the prison in Moxico are women, representing a rate of two percent, well below the 357 men (98 percent) incarcerated.

The Moxico county jail is currently overcrowded, in the order of 33 percent, a capacity occupied by an overwhelming majority of men, with 357 prisoners against six women.

Of that number, 210 inmates, equivalent to 57 percent, are in preventive custody, while 153, including three women, are under effective imprisonment.

Speaking at the commemoration of the 44 years of existence of the Prison Services, the director of the institution, Victorino Cambinda, reiterated the lack of logistical conditions to accommodate and give dignity to the inmates.

During the celebration ceremony, held under the motto “Penitentiary Services, 44 solid years in the rehabilitation and social reintegration of inmates consolidating prison production”, he advocated for the rehabilitation of the property.

“We have problems with accommodation for prisoners, issues of basic sanitation, lack of water pipes, vehicles for the removal of waste and operational work”, he lamented.

Lack of road delays opening of Moxico’s largest prison

The opening of the largest prison in the province of Moxico, built in the district of Bomba, east of Luena, is conditioned by the delay in the construction of the 30-kilometre section of access to the county jail.

With the capacity to admit 816 inmates, the Boma prison is fully equipped and prepared to receive inmates from the end of 2022.

Recently, in statements to the press, after visiting the development, the provincial governor, Ernesto Muangala, committed himself to finding solutions, starting with the earthworks of the 30 kilometers of the chain up to the EN180.

“…. all that remains is to improve the route so that, in a short time, we can inaugurate it in order to minimize the overcrowding that exists in the Luena prison”, acknowledged the official.

With a capacity to house 816 inmates, distributed in six blocks, male and female, construction work on the Boma prison began in October 2013, in a total area of 24,000 square meters.

The property has cells, a school, a medical center, an administrative area, a kitchen, a multipurpose field and a soccer field, among other services.
