Africa-Press – Angola. The governor of the province of Cuanza-Norte, Pedro Makita, defended the continued dignification of the protagonists of the famous Battle of Cuito Cuanavale, for the spiritual and material well-being of the combatants, as well as their families.

The governor, who was speaking in the city of Ndalatando, on the occasion of the 23rd of March, dedicated to the Liberation of Southern Africa, congratulated the “heroes” of the said battle, which took place between the 15th of November 1987 and the 23rd of March 1988, was instrumental in the liberation of Southern African nations that were under the dominion of South Africa’s apartheid racial segregation regime.

The leader highlighted the importance of the Battle of Cuito Cuanavale, as a determining factor for the release of Nelson Mandela and consequent independence of Namibia.

The governor of Cuanza-Norte referred that on March 23, 1987, the world witnessed the end of one of the battles never seen in Africa, which took place in the province of Cuando-Cubango, where the Armies of Angola (FAPLA-Forças Armadas Popular de Libertação de Angola) and Cuba (FAR) against the “powerful” South African army, which was, without a doubt, decisive for the release of Nelson Mandela and, consequently, the independence of Namibia.

Pedro Makita highlighted the strong patriotic sense shown by the heroes of Cuito Cuanavale, underlining that in this battle, carried out in particularly difficult conditions, several combatants resisted heroically, with bravery, courage, determination and strong patriotic sense, giving their all to the affirmation of our country in the context of Nations.

The governor of Cuanza-Norte expressed a feeling of gratitude and affection to the members of the famous battle, from soldiers to officials, for ensuring the success of the Angolan people, in a struggle that allowed the safeguarding of the integrity of the homeland, national sovereignty and the Independence of Angola.
