Governor of Zaire wants oil companies to support the World Heritage city

Africa-Press – Angola. The governor of the province of Zaire, Adriano Mendes de Carvalho, on Tuesday, in the city of Soyo, requested the support of companies in the oil sector in preserving the tangible and intangible heritage of Mbanza Kongo, World Cultural Heritage.

According to the official, who was speaking at a meeting with the Minister of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas, Diamantino Azevedo, and operators in the sector, this support is necessary in light of the commitments assumed with UNESCO.

“We would like to have this support, within the scope of the social responsibility of companies in the oil sector that operate in the region, in the construction of infrastructures in the fields of health, education, basic sanitation, among other areas”, he explained.

He recognized that there are already actions in this direction, defending, however, a previous agreement between the local government and the oil operators so that the support is directed towards the resolution of the problems that most worry the population of the region.

He referred that, since the inscription of Mbanza Kongo, on the UNESCO World Heritage list, on July 8, 2017, the local government has seen growing responsibilities in the preservation of this historical and cultural heritage.

Adriano Mendes de Carvalho, recalled that the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) requires a series of actions that must be implemented in the locality, some of which require the support of the private sector, above all, the oil sector.

He listed the construction of the new Mbanza Kongo airport, in progress, restoration of monuments and local historic sites, with emphasis on the ruins of the old Catholic cathedral (Kulumbimbi), Museum of the Kings of Kongo, as well as the training of archaeologists and historians.

In the view of the governor of Zaire, these and other projects, if well aligned with the province’s tourist potential, would make the region a preferred destination for domestic and foreign tourists.

Minister defends opening the sector to local young people

In response to requests from the governor of Zaire, the Minister of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas, Diamantino Azevedo, said that the sector is receptive to the request made, but defended, above all, the need for greater openness in the sector that targets local youth .

He spoke of a possible investment in a modern technical-professional training center in the region, capable of responding to the demand of young people who intend to embrace the branch of the oil industry.

Minister Diamantino Azevedo worked this Tuesday, for a few hours in the city of Soyo, where he X-rayed the projects linked to the sector he directs in the country.
