Africa-Press – Angola. The national senior women’s basketball team is in group A of the African Championship “Afrobasket ́2023“, taking place from 28 July to 6 August, in Kigali, Rwanda, following an invitation from FIBA-Africa.
According to the draw held on Friday night, in Mozambique, on the sidelines of the continental governing body’s Congress, Angola was partnered with host Rwanda and another member of zone two or three to be defined.
The two-time African champions failed to qualify for the tournament due to their defeat by Mozambique, by 82-90, in Bulawayo (Zimbabwe), in the Zone VI final, played last February.
Subsequently, it benefited from the “Will Card“ (Invitation from FIBA-Africa) to compete in the 26th edition of the event, since there are areas of the continent that did not hold the respective qualifying events.
Remember, Angola won this competition in 2011 and 2013 under the leadership of coach Aníbal Moreira, currently leader of the men’s selection (hendecacampeões) that prepares AFROCAN ́2023.
The Afrobasket draw “Rwanda ́2023“ placed in group B, the teams of Cameroon, Mozambique and a player to be known soon.
In group C, appear Mali, Senegal and Uganda, while Nigeria, Egypt and Congo form D.
AFROCAN’2023, taking place from the 8th to the 16th of July in Benguela (Angola), was also drawn the night before, with the result that the host is in group B with Mali and another member to meet.
In group A comes Kenya, Gambia and a representative of zone two or three. In C is Morocco and a representative of zone one or five, while in D are DRC, Mozambique and Cameroon.
