Africa-Press – Angola. The delegate from the Ministry of the Interior in the province of Benguela, Aristófanes dos Santos, said that the main municipality needs at least six more police stations to serve the new peripheral neighbourhoods.
According to Aristófanes dos Santos, currently with around one million inhabitants, the provincial capital of Benguela has only five police stations, a number that he considers insignificant taking into account its territorial extension (2,100 square kilometres).
The official informed that the first police station serves 11 neighborhoods, the second covers 14, the third 29, while the fourth and fifth police stations serve 22 and 11 peripheral neighborhoods, respectively.
Aristófanes dos Santos said that the municipality of Benguela is also the most worrying from the point of view of public security, as the more the city grows, the more crimes occur, due to the number of inhabitants.
“The emergence of new police stations will make it possible to increase police coverage and better control and interaction with citizens”, he emphasized.
The delegate revealed that the institution he represents has already sent a proposal to the Government of Benguela, so that when there is financial availability, gradually, this project can be materialized.
As for the public security situation in the province, he assured that from a numerical point of view (crimes) it is stable, although there may be isolated cases that do not come to the attention of the police.
Asked about the security situation in schools, he said that school institutions are in the operational territory of the public security forces.
However, he said, the responsibility for security inside schools should not be with the police. “It is necessary that in the idealization, construction or design of educational establishments, security aspects are taken into account such as high walls and the hiring of private personnel to guarantee their safety”, he said.
In the same vein, he emphasized that the National Police have the responsibility to participate in this security in collaboration with school management, parent and teacher committees, identifying and combating specific situations of crime.
