Africa-Press – Angola. Gabon’s contribution, with a value of USD 500,000 to the peace efforts in the East of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), was praised, Tuesday, in Luanda, by the African Heads of State and Government who participated at the Quadripartite Summit of four regional bodies in Africa.
The praise appears in the 22-point press release produced at the end of the Summit that brought together leaders of the East African Community (EAC), the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICRGL) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), under the coordination of the African Union.
Regional leaders welcomed the signing of the USD 2 million grant agreement between the African Union and the East African Community to facilitate FR-CAO operations.
In the final communiqué, participants at the meeting also congratulated Angola and Senegal for their financial support of USD 1 million each to the Nairobi Process led by the East African Community (EAC).
During the Luanda Summit, an appeal was launched to member countries of the African Union (AU) to contribute, on a voluntary basis, to peace processes in Africa.
The leaders recognized the efforts of the Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC), FR-CAO and the Stabilization Mission of the United Nations Organization in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) in eradicating the negative forces operating in the eastern region of that country.
In this context, the Heads of State and Government paid tribute to all the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in eastern DRC and offered condolences to their families and countries, wishing the injured a speedy recovery.
They expressed appreciation to Angola for hosting the First Quadripartite Summit of African leaders and decided to institutionalize the event as a Platform for harmonization and consultations, looking forward to the holding of the 2nd Quadripartite Summit.
The leaders welcomed Burundi’s proposal to host the second Quadripartite meeting in Bujumbura, at a date yet to be announced, and also requested the African Union Commission to convene a meeting of the Chiefs of General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Quadripartite Members to coordinate existing and planned deployment actions in eastern DRC.
They also emphasized the need for information sharing and timely consultations between the African Union Commission, the United Nations and regional bodies with regard to efforts to restore Peace and Stability in the East of the DRC and in the region.
The inter-regional meeting is part of the deliberations of the XI Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (CIRGL), held on the 3rd of this month, in Luanda, in an initiative of the Angolan Head of State, João Lourenço, Acting President of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region.
The quadripartite meeting was attended by the President of the Union of the Comoros and acting of the African Union, Azali Assoumani, the Head of State of Zimbabwe and acting President of the Peace and Security Council of the African Union, Emmerson Mnangagwa, and the President of Gabon, and member of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), Ali Bongo.
Also present were the President of Burundi and the East African Community (EAC), Evarist Ndayishimiye, the Head of State of the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the acting President of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), Félix Tshisekedi, the former President of Kenya and CAO Designated Facilitator Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta.
The Vice-President of Namibia, Nangolo Mbumba, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Rwanda, Vincent Biruta, the President of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahammat, Ambassador Parfait Onanga, representative of the UN Secretary General, as well as as the president of the ECCAS Commission, and the executive secretaries of IRGL, SADC and CAO.
