Africa-Press – Angola. The Angolan international Paulo Sérgio was elected by the Referees Committee of CAF (Confederação Africana de Futebol) to judge matches of the 22nd edition of the Cosafa Cup, competition to be played from 5 to 16 July, in Durban (South Africa) .

A highly competitive referee since 2015, the year in which he made his debut in the “Girabola” First Division National Football Championship, Paulo Sérgio marks, in this way, the first presence in this tournament of the countries of the Southern African Region, after having already participated in continental club competitions, notably the Champions League and the Nelson Mandela Cup.

About this new challenge in national team competitions, the judge, born in the province of Moxico, considers it to be a “superb opportunity” to continue making strides in his professional career, promising, in this way, to work with will and determination to dignify Angolan arbitration on the international scene.

“I feel proud to be part of the new refereeing elite that is being projected by CAF, so I will do everything to take advantage of this opportunity”, he stressed.

Paulo Sérgio, mentor of a mass refereeing project in the province of Moxico, said that he is going to Cosafa with a high level of physical and psychological preparation, stating that “I have waited a long time for this invitation from CAF”.

The Angolan under-20 team is one of the 12 participants in this 22nd edition of the regional competition.

Angola, which won the titles in 1999, 2001 and 2004, is in Group C, with Mozambique (debut opponent on the 7th), Mauritius and Lesotho.

South Africa, Namibia, Eswatini and Botswana are in Group A, while Zambia, Malawi, Seychelles and Comoros are joined in B.

The best team in each group qualifies for the semi-finals, along with the second best team overall. The semi-finals take place on the 14th of July, while the final and third-place match will take place on the 16th of the same month.

Zambia are the reigning champions.
