Africa-Press – Angola. The National Police recorded 20,953 different crimes last year in Luanda, 566 more compared to 2020.
The data were made public on Monday in Luanda by the provincial commander of the National Police, Eduardo Cerqueira.
The commander, who was speaking in reference to the 46th anniversary of the National Police, said that crime tends to increase and, to reverse the situation, actions have been taken to ensure public security, order and tranquility in the capital.
According to Eduardo Cerqueira, within the scope of security operations, last year 11,830 arrests were made, 84 more compared to 2020, as well as 898 firearms seized.
He added that last year, 2,628 road accidents were recorded, 1,179 more than in 2020, which caused 830 deaths, 404 more than in 2020. Accidents also left 2,324 injured, 1,020 more than in 2020.
During the past year, he said, 89,619 fines were applied, with an increase of 31,025.
“The main concerns were voluntary homicides for resistance to robbery, for justice in their own hands, sexual abuse of minors, theft of vehicles and motorcycles”, he said.
According to Eduardo Cerqueira, Luanda is a challenging city in terms of preventing and fighting crime, as it has characteristics and factors such as population density, high road traffic, large circulation of monetary values resulting from commercial activity and concentration in the urban center of the political center. and administration of the country.
The commander defended the combination of multisectoral efforts by various social actors, to guarantee the safety of the population in Luanda.”There is a need to overcome some social factors, such as poor public lighting, especially in peripheral neighborhoods, poor integration of children from and on the street, incivilities arising from the existence of street markets, unstructured street vending, noise pollution, as well as prostitution and unemployment”, he stressed.
Electoral process
Regarding the electoral process planned for the current year, Eduardo Cerqueira guaranteed that the National Police is ready and able to make the elections run smoothly.
He informed that, last year, 197 manifestations of a political and social nature were registered, carried out by groups of activists and citizens, of which 155 were previously communicated.
According to Eduardo Cerqueira, 33 demonstrations were dispersed because of the violation of legal precepts, culminating in the arrest of several individuals.
Eduardo Cerqueira informed that the National Police has as a challenge the psycho-emotional, scientific and training preparation of its officers, aiming to provide them with knowledge that allows a more professional intervention in the protection of people and property, as well as in the security of events. whose magnitude requires a police presence.
Emphasis on asset security
The governor of Luanda, Ana Paula de Carvalho, highlighted the importance of the National Police in the security of the population and public goods, as well as in guaranteeing public order and tranquility.
The governor underlined that in the capital, due to several factors, the Police are required to adapt and modernize, in order to respond satisfactorily to the challenges imposed.
“About 30 percent of the total number of National Police personnel are distributed in the province of Luanda, to serve 9,079,811 inhabitants”, said the governor, acknowledging that the Police work tirelessly, despite the limitations of human resources, materials and infrastructure.
According to the governor of Luanda, proximity policing is an assertive bet for the materialization of the link between the Police, citizens and administrative authorities.
Ana Paula de Carvalho defended greater participation by the population in denouncing unseemly practices, which culminate in the vandalization of public assets.
In fact, the governor advised an action supported by discipline, rigor and spirit of mission, in defense of the Democratic State and of Law, where the freedoms of citizens are respected, as well as an equivalent response to events that threaten public order and tranquility. She expressed concern about road accidents, taking into account the number of deaths it causes.
