Africa-Press – Angola. The Minister of National Defence, Former Combatants and Veterans of the Fatherland, João Ernesto dos Santos, urges the Angolan Navy staff to redouble their engagement in organizational and functional actions, so that the Executive’s investment is reflected in the future performance of this branch of the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA).

In a note, the minister asked professionals from the units and bodies of the Navy to assume their responsibilities in the Angolan State Security System.

According to the minister, the commemoration of the 47th anniversary of the Angolan Navy (MGA), to be celebrated on the 10th of July (Monday), takes place at a time when this Body gains more “breath” in the trajectory of its empowerment, with actions with a structuring impact on the Angolan Executive.

Among these actions, the “Calunga Project” stands out, embodied in the creation of the National System of Maritime Surveillance, which now has a National Center for Maritime Coordination and Surveillance, recently visited by the President of the Republic and Commander-in-Chief of the FAA, John Lawrence.

The minister also recalls that this Center will have three other regional centers in Namibe, Benguela and Zaire (Soyo), the latter to be inaugurated this Monday, July 10 of this year, as part of the celebration of the 47th anniversary of the MGA .

Finally, João Ernesto dos Santos congratulates the admirals, senior officers, ship’s lieutenants and subalterns, sergeants, squares and civilian workers in this field, wishing them many successes in fulfilling the difficult and noble mission of serving the Homeland.

The Angolan Navy (MGA) is the naval branch of the Angolan Armed Forces, whose mission is to defend territorial integrity and national sovereignty at sea, protection of maritime communication lines, search and rescue, navigation safety, inspection of fisheries, protection of marine resources and support for the country’s foreign policy.

Created on the 10th of July 1976, after the end of the first course for Naval Specialists, given by Cuban instructors at the Naval Base in Luanda, the genesis of the MGA can be traced back to the 11th of November 1975, when a group of Angolan combatants, of the integrated forces takes over the installations of the colonial Navy, due to their abandonment by the Portuguese authorities.
