Coach regrets Dumbo's disqualification

Africa-Press – Angola. The disqualification of sprinter Regina Dumbo, due to technical failure, in the 400m test for the visually impaired, class T11, on Sunday, is seen by the national coach as a slack in Angola’s objectives.

The athlete from the province of Huambo ranked second, with a time of 1:01.83, beating her own record, which was 1:02.48, but which is without effect given what happened.

José Manuel considers that the guide Adão Soares made an unusual mistake for an experienced runner, when he stepped on the line of a track that was not his, leading to the disqualification of the pair.

He referred that Regina Dumbo will now need at least one more participation in a qualifying event for the Paralympic Games (France’2024) in search of improving her current mark of 1: 02.48, at the risk of being out of the specialty, yet to be determined in the 100 and 200 meters.

Looking ahead to Wednesday’s qualifiers, the coach said that the three athletes, namely Regina Dumbo, Juliana Moko and Emeloide Kassang, guarantee passage to the semi-finals.

He said it was the specialty where they are strongest, such as in the 200 meters.

As for Manuel Jaime, a disabled athlete, class T46, who will also evolve on Wednesday, in the 400m, he said that the test will be decisive to assess whether the commitment to speed continues in this long distance specialist in the 1500m.

After Angola reached the semi-finals in several World Championships, José Manuel said that in this competition in France the objective is to do the same and, if possible, improve.

In her view, being among the eight best in the world opens up good prospects for direct qualification for the 2024 Paralympic Games.

José Manuel, however, indicated that this set, which includes more than 20 potential candidates, is being projected to dispute the podium only in the 2028 edition, in Los Angeles (USA).

Today, Monday, is a free day for the national team, even so the group must travel to the Charlety Porte de Gentilly stadium, in Paris, to see any opponents evolve in the following competitions.
