Navy calls for definition of border marker

Africa-Press – Angola. The Naval Commander of the Angolan Navy (MGA) in Cabinda, Rear Admiral Lourenço Vaz Gonçalves, defended, Monday, the definition of the maritime border between Angola and Congo, in the northern coastal area of the commune of Massabi ( Cacongo).

The official expressed this position at the provincial commemoration of the 47th anniversary of the MGA, marked this Monday (10th), adding that this is one of the situations that most concerns his command.

For this reason, he proposed that in the joint meeting of Defense and Border Security Angola/Republic of Congo, the parties can find solutions for the maritime border demarcation, in order to put an end to the constant violations that are registered by vessels on both sides. .

“This area (Massabi) is the one that worries us the most, because there are still activities, on the part of the Congolese, in our sea, due to the situation of the border that divides the two countries”, he argued.

As for the current situation of the maritime border, Lourenço Gonçalves considered it calm, without threats, such as the navigation of drug traffickers or the movement of piracy and terrorist ships.

However, he said that the registration of cases of illegal fishing and fuel smuggling was worrying.

Likewise, he pointed out as a concern the existence of fishermen who violate the limits of a thousand meters, at least, in relation to oil platforms, due to the dangers and other risks and threats to the safety of the oil and natural gas exploration activity.

He revealed that from July 2022 to July this year, four (4) Congolese ships were seized, for violating the maritime border and illegal fishing in the sea in the province of Cabinda.

Two of the ships have already been released, for having paid the respective fine, while the others are waiting for their owners to do so.
