Africa-Press – Angola. The king of Ombala ya Nalueque, in Cunene province, Mário Satipamba, defended more investment in infrastructure for the functioning of the ombalas, aiming at safeguarding the traditional features of the people.

Ombala ya Nalueque, located in the municipality of Ombadja, 158 kilometers southwest of the city of Ondjiva, capital of Cunene, is one of the three kingdoms in the province. The other two are Ombala yo Mungo and Oukwanhama.

Regarding the functioning of the ombala, the sovereign suggested to the Government to include in the next budget of the province, social projects, of support to the reign and the communities themselves.

He said that there is already a pilot experience in the kingdom of Bailundo, in Huambo, which began 10 years ago, with the construction of the facilities where the king works, residences for the sobas and others, in this case it makes perfect sense that it could continue in the remaining ombalas .

“The kingdoms are important partners of the State, within the communities, hence they must have minimal conditions, from a well-organized office in order to produce some information for interaction with government authorities”, he said.

He reported that socially things took a long time to happen in that historic space, the scene of one of the biggest battles of resistance to the colonial occupation, in September 1904, the so-called battle of Vau do Pembe.

Mário Shatipamba made it known that, since 1975, the region has only been contemplated with some first level schools, lacking those of the II cycle, since even those of the 7th and 9th grade only exist in the village of Omotolo, Chetekela and Dombodola, between 20 and 25 kilometers away.

In turn, the head of the Cultural Action department in Cunene, Adérito Armando, said that the suggestion came to wake up the office that will propose to the provincial government so that these conditions are created at the level of the villages. The.

History of the Kingdom of Ombala ya Nalueque

The kingdom began to be populated from the 15th century, probably when people from the great lakes emerged, with the aim of seeking better living conditions.

Among the characteristic features of its trajectory, the colonial resistance war, which lasted 16 years, stands out.

In this particular, it highlights the battle registered in 1891, in the locality of Omdube yo Fenge, where the colonial invader was defeated.

Then, on September 25, 1904, the memorable battle of Vau do Pembe, considered the greatest defeat of the Portuguese colonial occupation in Africa.

The confrontation opposed a detachment of forces from the Portuguese army, commanded by Captain Luís Pinto de Almeida and Cuamato warriors, under the orders of King Oshietekela and resulted in the defeat of the Portuguese forces, who lost about 250 men, more than half of the present troops.

This battle is one of the few African victories against a European power during the wars of colonial occupation, having only a parallel in the Battle of Isandhlwana, won by the Zulus against the British in 1879, or in the battle of Adoua won by the Ethiopians against the Italians in 1896.

Mário Satipamba is the twentieth king of Ombala ya Nalueque, enthroned in 2009.
