Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the Republic of Cuba, Miguel Mario Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, arrived this Sunday (20th) in Luanda, for a state visit to Angola, with a view to strengthening bilateral relations.

Upon arrival, the Central American statesman and his companions were received at the 4 de Fevereiro International Airport by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Teté António, and by members of the Cuban Embassy in Angola.

During three days on Angolan soil, Miguel Mario Díaz-Canel Bermúdez will fulfill an intense agenda, which includes, among others, a meeting with his counterpart João Lourenço and a visit to the Agostinho Neto Memorial, where he will sign the Book of Honour.

According to the visit program, the Cuban president will also witness the signing of agreements between delegations from both countries and participate in a solemn session in the National Assembly.

On the 22nd, before returning, he will go to Alto das Cruzes Cemetery to lay a wreath on the tomb of Commander Raúl Diaz Arguelles Garcia, as well as visit the Angola and Cuba school and meet with former Angolan students in Cuba and friends.

Angola and Cuba, an island state, maintain strategic relations dating back 47 years, underpinned by the General Cooperation Agreement, signed in February 1976, and focused essentially on the sectors of Health, Education and Defence.

This Caribbean State has trained many Angolan staff and aspires to greater involvement in economic cooperation with Angola, the country it supported in the war against the apartheid regime in South Africa.
