Chiri Mining Company Starts Operating this Month

Africa-Press – Angola. The Chiri Mining Company will officially start operating on the 22nd of this month, in the province of Lunda-Sul, as part of the festivities commemorating Angolan Miner’s Day, which is celebrated on April 27th of each year.

According to a note from ENDIAMA, the creation of the Mining Company stems from a mining investment contract signed in Portugal in October 2021 between the National Diamond Company of Angola (25%) and Rio Tinto (75%), an Anglo-Australian multinational, witnessed by the Minister of Mineral Resources, Petroleum and Gas, Diamantino Azevedo.

The note states that the exploration operations of the Chiri kimberlite, one of the largest primary diamond deposits identified in Angola, will take place within an estimated area of 75 hectares, and will involve a workforce of 190 employees, 154 of whom are Angolan nationals and 34 expatriates.

On the same day, and within the scope of the anniversary, the closing ceremony of the 5th and 6th training cycles of the ENDIAMA Technical and Professional Training Center will take place, which includes 25 scholarship recipients, children of former employees of the company, an action included within the framework of the company’s social responsibility investments.

The Chiri mine project, located in Lunda-Sul, is a key diamond concession in Angola and aims at the development of a kimberlite with potential for high-tech exploration, with complementary studies initiated to strengthen national diamond production.
