Africa-Press – Angola. The traditional authorities of the municipality of Ombadja, in Cunene, asked the provincial government this Monday for more investment in national production, to ease the prices of basic goods.
On the sidelines of the election ceremony for the new reign of the Humbe community, the chiefs stated that the government needs to take advantage of the country’s agricultural potential and create conditions to increasingly encourage food production.
The great chief of the Humbe commune, Júlio Mwendangula, said that the existing lands should be taken advantage of and empower peasant families with agricultural inputs.
“Due to insufficient rainfall, the massango and massambala crops spoiled in the agricultural fields,” he said.
He recalled that families with some cattle manage to sell animals to buy food in the neighboring province of Huíla.
For his part, the great chief of the Naulila commune, Justo Mutindi, said that the community is already feeling the effects of hunger, due to the agricultural campaign that was not productive.
He explained that, with large-scale production, the prices of the basic basket, which are high in the market, would be cheaper, and everyone would have purchasing power.
He highlighted the importance of carrying out structuring projects to combat drought in Cunene, such as the Cafu channel, the Ndue, Calucuve dams and others on the right bank of the Cunene river.
Justo Mutindi underlined that in some time these projects will bear fruit for the population in terms of water supply, livestock and agriculture, combating hunger.
With 394,964 inhabitants, the municipality of Ombadja is made up of the communes of Xangongo (headquarters), Humbe, Naulila, Mucope and Ombala yo Mungo.
