Africa-Press – Angola. The National Police (PN) is prepared to prevent and inhibit any act that could be a crime, at the Dr. António Agostinho Neto International Airport (AIAAN), said, this Friday, in the capital, the general commander of the corporation , Arnaldo Carlos.
The official made these statements on the sidelines of the inauguration, by the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, of the International Airport, located in the commune of Bom Jesus, municipality of Icolo e Bengo (Luanda).
According to the general commander, airport security “is extremely important, as this is a space where several elements that contribute to the country’s development converge.”
For this reason, Commissioner Arnaldo Carlos said that all basic security aspects for the airport to function fully are guaranteed, by the police forces in their most diverse specialties.
Likewise, he highlighted the need for permanent staff training, as “we are in the era of digital transition and we must follow all developments, which implies cooperation with other countries for appropriate assistance”.
In relation to combating transnational crimes, he highlighted that the country already has good practices, also resulting from collaboration with the States of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), as well as with Interpol (International Criminal Police Organization), in order to maintain a close combat.
Still in relation to drug trafficking, he revealed that, at a given moment, Angola began to be a transit point, “but it is gradually becoming a point of consumption, which is a global problem, and is therefore necessary that the police are up to the task of counteracting anomalous situations so that they do not assume alarming proportions”.
The inauguration ceremony of the infrastructure, which took place on the eve of the celebration of 48 years of national independence, was attended by 1,500 guests.
The new airport infrastructure occupies an area of 1,324 hectares, has capacity for 15 million passengers and a cargo volume of 130 thousand tons per year.
With two double runways, the airport is prepared to receive, among others, aircraft of the B747 and A380 types, the latter considered the largest commercial aircraft today.
The south runway (the largest), which is four thousand meters by 60 meters wide, received, in June 2022, the first experimental flight of a Boeing 777 type aircraft from the national flag company – TAAG.
In addition to the two runways, AIAAN also has 31 lanes, of which 19 are for international services and 11 are for domestic services, as well as 9 conveyor belts for baggage storage, six of which are dedicated to international flights.
The infrastructure includes 26 branches of the Migration and Foreigners Service (SME), a parking lot for 1,710 vehicles, as well as space reserved for shops, in an area of 1,825 square meters.
It also has 22 VIP lounges, a clinic and a first aid center attached to the passenger terminal, in addition to contemplating the construction of an airport city from scratch, which will cover a total area of 75 km2.
Dr. António Agostinho Neto International Airport has ramps, elevators and trained staff to pay special attention to people with reduced mobility.
The new airport was designed to be a HUB (revolving hub where a large number of flights are concentrated at certain times), with domestic, regional and international connections, being Angola’s main gateway to the world.
