Africa-Press – Angola. Nine hundred and sixty tons of copper, coming from Kolwezi, Democratic Republic of Congo, arrived this Sunday in the province of Benguela, on the experimental train managed by the Lobito Atlantic Railway consortium.

According to its commercial director, Artur Silva, the next shipments are scheduled for January 2024.

“We intend to increase to 10 thousand tons of copper and at the end of the year exceed the figure of 200 thousand tons”, he informed.

The train, with a composition of 16 wagons, left the municipality of Luau (Moxico) on December 29th, covering 1,289 kilometers until reaching the railway port city of Lobito.

The merchandise, he said, will remain in the Port of Lobito for a few days for the necessary treatment for export to international markets, namely European and Asian.

His counterpart from Caminho de Ferro de Benguela (CFB), Fábio Carvalho, assured that the company is operating with a fleet of around 150 wagons.

Despite recognizing that they are not enough, he assured that with them it is possible to meet demand.

LAR won the international competition to explore the Lobito Corridor on September 4, 2021.

The contract for the transfer of the concession of railway services and support logistics for the Lobito Corridor was signed on July 4, 2023, in this railway port city, in the presence of Statesmen from Angola, DR Congo and Zambia, namely João Lourenço, Félix Tshisekedi and Hakainde Hichilema.
