Africa-Press – Angola. The Minister of Industry and Commerce, Rui Miguè‚ns de Oliveira, called on Thursday in Luanda for consensus among the member states of the World Trade Organization (WTO) as a way to enable the reform of the global trading system.
The minister, who led the Angolan delegation at the organization’s XIV Ministerial Conference, stressed that the current international context, marked by geopolitical tensions and disruptions in trade chains, demands greater coordination among countries.
According to a press release received, Rui Miguè‚ns emphasized that the WTO reform process has been repeatedly delayed due to a lack of understanding among members, advocating for strengthened dialogue as a way to overcome existing impasses.
In his speech, the minister reiterated the importance of respecting already agreed multilateral rules, as well as the need to ensure a more balanced trading system, with particular attention to the development of growing countries.
Among the topics under discussion at the conference are the reforms of the organization, trade in agricultural products, services and digital trade, as well as technical support for developing countries.
Angola is also participating in meetings of strategic groups, such as the African Group, the ACP Group and the Least Developed Countries Group, where it has been aligning positions with other member states.
The WTO ministerial conference brings together more than 160 members and constitutes one of the main international forums for discussing the rules of global trade, at a time when the debate is intensifying on the need to make the system fairer, more inclusive and adapted to current challenges.
