Africa-Press – Angola. Artists and politicians from Huíla consider today, Friday, in Lubango, Rui Mingas as one of “the most important artists” who used music to express the feeling of repulsion towards colonization and also stood out in the process of affirmation of Angolan art across borders.
When reacting to the death of the nationalist, aged 84, in Portugal, the musician, Joaquim Patrício Correia, 62 years old, known as “Kim Pátria”, said that Rui Mingas was an “excellent” interpreter, he learned composing and singing songs that mark generations, Angola and abroad.
He highlighted record works such as “birin birin”, “mona mgambe”, “cantiga por luciana”, “makezu”, “poema da farra”, “muaduakini”, “adeus a hora da Larda” and “meninos do Huambo” that echo until today.
For the nationalist, Juliano Tyamukwavo, Rui Mingas’ legacy must remain, in the sense that new and future generations know how to immortalize the man who remained firm in defending the country.
He stated that the failed candidate was one of those compatriots who revolutionized the MPLA, alongside the 1st president of the Republic of Angola, António Agostinho Neto, alongside other nationalists such as Viriato da Cruz, António Jacinto and Mário António.
The director of the provincial office of culture, tourism, youth and sports, in Huíla, Osvaldo Lunda, stated that culture is poorer, and considers Minga a “true icon” of Angolan sport and culture.
“Despite his age, 84 years old, we believe that Rui Mingas still had a lot to give, when it comes to music, unfortunately his health stole his life and, on this day of mourning and pain, I address the bereaved family’s Deepest condolences”, he lamented.
For the provincial secretary of the MPLA, for the area of information and propaganda, in Huíla, Castilho Cacumba, said that as a nationalist and politician, deputy, Rui Mingas was an important milestone of unique dimension and a compatriot always dedicated to the cause of the Angolan people.
He reinforced that through the works left behind, “it is necessary to exalt and recognize the important role played by this historic and faithful Angolan servant”.
The director of social communications of the provincial government of Huíla, Luís Garrido, Rui Mingas was one of those men who encouraged sports in the country, as thanks to his intervention, Angola participated and hosted important competitions, such as the African junior basketball tournament in 1980.
Rui Alberto Vieira Dias Rodrigues Mingas was born on May 12, 1939, having distinguished himself in his youth in athletics, particularly in the high jump and the 110 meter hurdles in Angola and Portugal.
His political conduct as an active MPLA activist led him to compose poems by Angolan nationalists such as Viriato da Cruz, Agostinho Neto, Mário António and António Jacinto.
