Africa-Press – Angola. Four hundred and 21 disadvantaged citizens in conflict benefited, in 2023, from free legal assistance, promoted by the provincial council of the Bar Association (OOA) in Huambo, compared to 409 assisted in 2022.

These are 233 family cases, 94 criminal, 45 alimony, 29 civil, 18 labor and two divorce, handled by trainee lawyers.

The information was provided, this Tuesday, by the president of the OAA council in the province of Huambo, Domingos Sassi, when he noted that, of the processes in question, some have already concluded, with the due sentence, while others are in the legal process in the courts.

He recalled that these were needy citizens without any financial resources to hire a lawyer.

Of the complaints, Domingos Sassi was concerned about the high rate of cases of violations of children’s rights in homes by their parents, of hospital healthcare, due to the lack of some essential equipment, and of demonstrations, which need to be reviewed by the authorities from the country.

He reported that the OAA in Huambo received, in 2023, eight reports against lawyers, four of which came from Judicial Magistrates and the Public Prosecutor’s Office, which ended in an investigation, while the rest from private individuals, triggering a disciplinary process, which resulted in the suspension of one of the lawyers.

According to the person responsible, it also carried out several activities, with emphasis on six training cycles for the benefit of lawyers in matters linked to Civil, Constitutional, Moral and Administrative Law, in addition to consultation and legal assistance meetings with government entities, magistrates and unions.

The official announced that Huambo granted, in 2023, licenses to 62 lawyers and 114 to interns, in addition to another 273 professionals having been admitted to the access exam.

He made it known that the OAA in the province of Huambo controls 480 lawyers, with 55 offices in Bailundo, Caála and Huambo, a figure that he considered insufficient, serving the more than two million 700 thousand inhabitants of this region of the Central Highlands of the country, who seek services of lawyers.

He highlighted as prospects for this year, in addition to the training cycles, the extension of the order in the other municipalities of the province, with due consultation with the administrations, to carry out daily or weekly consultations, so that citizens enjoy their rights in society.

Among the gains of 2023, he indicated the entry into operation of the new OAA headquarters in Huambo, with five offices, secretariat of the Studies and Training center, meeting and classroom rooms with 150 seats, for the proper accommodation of professionals, in ways to dignify the class.
