AU prepares 37th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government

Africa-Press – Angola. African Union (AU) hosts, since Monday, the 47th Ordinary Session of the organization’s Permanent Representatives Committee (COREP), focusing on the preparation of the 44th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council and the 37th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Chiefs of State and Government, to be held from the 14th to the 18th of February this year.

The agenda of the COREP meeting, which runs until the 26th of the current month, involves several points proposed by Member States, highlighting the presentation of the report of the 3rd Edition of the Pan-African Forum for the Culture of Peace and Non-Violence – Luanda Biennial, held from 22 to 24 November 2023.

​According to a press release from the Permanent Mission to the AU, in addition to the aforementioned point suggested by Angola, the event ​will consider the report of the joint session of the Subcommittee on Supervision and General Coordination of Budgetary, Administrative and Financial Issues and Experts Technicians of the Committee of Fifteen Ministers of Finance (F15), among other documents.

With the participation of the Ambassador of Angola to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the AU and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), Miguel Bembe, COREP will also analyze the reports of the specialized technical committees, namely, Education, Science and Technology, Agriculture, Rural Development, Water and Environment, Communications and Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment, and Justice and Legal Affairs.

The session’s agenda also highlights the analysis of the summary document and the roadmap for the theme of the year 2024 “Training Africans for the 21st Century: Creating resilient education systems to increase access to inclusive learning, throughout life, quality and relevant in Africa” and the assessment of reports from the Commission and other specialized bodies and agencies of the AU.

In this context, the report on the African Union’s Transition Approach to Results-Based Management will be analyzed, the report on the Fourth Biennial Review of the Integrated African Agricultural Development Program (CAADP), the Second Ten-Year Plan for the implementation of Agenda 2063, the AU Five-Year Strategic Plan and Status of Implementation of Decisions, and the Revised AU Policy on Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development (PRPC).

Analysis of the Draft Terms of Reference of the African Union Ministerial Committee Against Terrorism (AUMCCT), as well as the reports of the AU Commission on the Elements of Migration in Africa, the Commission on the Humanitarian Situation in Africa, and the Assessment Continental Ten Year of the Addis Ababa Declaration on Population and Development in Africa beyond 2014 (AADPD) are other items on COREP’s agenda.

Finally, the session’s agenda includes the analysis and adoption of the AU Strategic Action Plan for the Promotion and Protection of Human and Peoples’ Rights in Africa, and the assessment of the activity reports of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR), the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights (TADHP), including the Results of the Retreat held in March 2022, in the Tanzanian city of Arusha, the AU Advisory Council Against Corruption (AUABC) and the African Committee for Experts on the Rights and Welfare of Children (ACERWC).​
