Africa-Press – Angola. The General Tax Administration (AGT) began this Thursday, in Luanda, to place seals on illegal commercial establishments in the Catinton market, with the aim of collecting taxes from taxpayers in a legitimate way.

On the sidelines of the certification process for warehouses, stores and kiosks, the administrator of AGT, Tiago Cordeiro dos Santos, made it known that 250 commercial establishments previously registered in that area are targeted.

“AGT technicians are today also assessing, door-to-door, the difficulties and constraints of taxpayers. Find out if they pay taxes, if they have a NIF and if the warehouses are registered under the effect of property tax or another regime” , he explained.

He recalled that previously he passed sporadically through the markets, where there was no control due to a lack of technicians and the capacity to be everywhere, but now there are more people and the strategy was chosen to post posts in high-traffic areas for better monitoring..

According to Tiago Cordeiro dos Santos, many taxpayers do not pay taxes because most of the difficulty in payments has to do with financial and fiscal literacy.

For this reason, explained the manager of the General Tax Administration, the process of raising awareness among traders was launched regarding the expansion of the registration base and tax payments.

The head of AGT said that he hopes that each taxpayer in his or her ability to contribute will pay 100 to one million kwanzas, because all companies, from large, medium and small companies, raise revenue for the State coffers.

On the occasion, Tiago Cordeiro dos Santos highlighted that the General Tax Administration made it known that the program plans to register, at the level of the country’s capital, more than ten thousand commercial establishments.

Today, the official opening of the Billing and Sealing Phase of commercial establishments located in the largest markets in the province of Luanda took place, within the scope of “Operação Informais”, which began in December last year.

The objective of this operation is to ensure that taxpayers, owners of stores, warehouses and canteens comply with their declaratory and contributory obligations, under penalty of seeing their establishments sealed/closed due to lack of regularization.

In the first phase of the initiative, those targeted were visited by technicians from the Tax Administration and the Tax and Customs Police, with the aim of providing the owners of commercial establishments with all the information necessary to regularize their tax situations.

With this, AGT intends to broaden its tax base, promote social justice and increase levels of voluntary compliance with tax obligations.
