Africa-Press – Angola. Solidarity between African states is a viable way to stop the phenomenon of coups d’état and consolidate the peace process on the continent, considered, this Wednesday, in Moxico, the specialist in International Relations, Gelson Jorge.
The academic was speaking topress regarding the Day of Peace and Reconciliation, established following the Declaration of the 16th Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU) on Terrorism and Unconstitutional Changes of Government in Africa, held in May 2022, in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea.
The expert understands that the continent has a long way to go in terms of consolidating peace and stability, fundamentally due to the existence of several small and medium-sized internal conflicts that strongly interfere with its development.
To reverse this order, Gelson Jorge argues that regional institutions must be strong and united, to discourage internal conflicts and the “assault” on power, through coups d’état, without observing democratic rules.
“These organizations need to condemn coups d’état at public auction to avoid degeneration in other states on the continent,” he said.
The academic also said that there is a need for these states and organizations to encourage the population to have legal mechanisms and peaceful means to resolve internal problems, encouraging more dialogue and diplomacy to achieve effective peace.
On the other hand, he called on the continent’s youth to play an active and essential role in the peacekeeping process.
Commenting on the recent announcement of the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Niger and Mali from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), he recalled that the dismemberment of States into international and regional organizations delays the objectives of creating the African Union (AU), of which the promotion of peace, security and stability on the continent.
However, on the other hand, he appealed to countries and institutions to prioritize the well-being of the population in the implementation of public policies, to prevent popular revolts, as well as to avoid interference from Western forces.
In turn, political scientist Aurélio Paciência Eiúba discourages the feeling of disharmony and disagreement among Africans, as it conditions the continent’s development strategies.
The academic stated that only with peace can Africa be placed on a competitive level with other regions of the world, guaranteeing progress and development, overcoming the phenomena of hunger, poverty and illiteracy.
“Politicians and civil society organizations must work together, in a spirit of fraternity for the development of the continent”, he highlighted.
