Africa-Press – Angola. Angola was invited to participate, from 17 to 21 May, in the Kenyan city of Kisumu, in the 9th Conference on African Cities (Africities), according to a note from the Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya, sent this Friday .
According to the document, the formal invitation was issued by the Kenyan authorities at the end of this year’s 1st session of the UN-Habitat Executive Council.
The 9th edition of Africities, organized by the Pan-African Organization of United Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLG), has as its theme “The role of Africa’s intermediary cities in the implementation of the United Nations 2030 Agenda and the African Union Agenda 2063 ”.
These two documents call for the urgent need to develop resilient and sustainable urbanization in Africa, aware of the fact that, by 2050, most of the African population will live in cities and cities in between.
Human settlements
The 1st session of the UN-Habitat Executive Council took place from Tuesday to Thursday and ended with the adoption of a set of decisions aimed at an activity and interaction of this United Nations program with the Member States, aiming at the implementation of actions for the development of sustainable human settlements.
Over three days, the Member States analyzed the UN-Habitat activity report, in the most varied areas of action; projected the next major world events related to the sector, such as the High Level meeting, on April 28, in New York, on the implementation of the New Urban Agenda; and the holding, from the 26th to the 20th of June, of the 11th World Urban Forum, in the Polish city of Katowice.
The participants decided to transfer to November, when the second session was held, the conclusion of discussions on the UN-Habitat budget and work program for the year 2023.
The Executive Council of UN-Habitat approved the candidacy of the city of Cairo, Egypt, for the holding, in 2024, of the 12th World Urban Forum. The Angolan delegation, led by the Minister of Public Works and Spatial Planning, Manuel Tavares de Almeida, included the Secretary of State for Spatial Planning, Molares d’Abril, the Angolan ambassador to Kenya and permanent representative to the UN Offices. in Nairobi, Sianga Abilio.
National directors from the Ministry of Public Works and Territorial Planning and staff from the Angolan Embassy in Nairobi were also part of the delegation to the 1st meeting of the UN-Habitat Executive Council.
