Africa-Press – Angola. Angola has called for this Friday, in Addis Ababa, an extraordinary summit on the situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), with a view to relaunching the peace process, confirmed the Angolan diplomatic mission in Ethiopian capital.
The meeting, initiated by President João Lourenço, precedes the 37th ordinary summit of the African Union (AU), scheduled for this weekend, in Addis Ababa.
A note distributed to the press explains that the meeting will address the relaunch of the peace process in eastern DRC, following the deployment of the Southern African Development Community (SAMIRDC) mission, approved in August 2023, in Luanda.
It will feature the participation of nine heads of state from ten countries, namely Angola, South Africa, Burundi, Equatorial Guinea, Malawi, Kenya, DRC, Rwanda, Sudan, South Sudan and Tanzania, who will join as guests Uganda and representatives of the African Union Commission.
The initiative is part of the recommendations of the last meeting of the military leaders of the Quadripartite Mechanism on the Peace Process in Eastern DRC, held in October 2023, also in Addis Ababa.
The meeting noted the need to adjust the deadlines for the withdrawal of existing peacekeeping forces on the ground, to avoid a security vacuum, in view of the deployment of the SADC military force.
It also recommended the creation of a corridor to facilitate the return of internally displaced people, provide humanitarian support and restore the authority of the State.
