Angola reaffirms commitment to Doha Action Program

Africa-Press – Angola. Angola reaffirmed, this Monday, at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York, its commitment to the implementation of the Doha Action Program, through the National Development Plan 2023-2027, during an interactive panel of the Group of Friends of Least Developed Countries (LDCs).

According to a press release, the country’s position was expressed by Angola’s permanent representative to the UN, Francisco José da Cruz, who recognized the Doha Program of Action as a new generation of renewed and strengthened commitments for the LDCs and their Full implementation will contribute to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda.

In this perspective, he highlighted that Angola is changing its development paradigm, seeking solid partnerships with the private sector and civil society, as well as international development partners, including the United Nations, the Bretton Woods Institutions and other multilateral institutions to implement the National Development Plan (PDN).

Francisco José da Cruz highlighted that within the framework of implementing the Programme, key areas were identified, such as Promoting the Development of Human Capital, Guaranteeing Economic Diversification, Eradicating Poverty in all its forms and dimensions, Strengthening democratic institutions and the Rule of Law are included in the set of priority actions.

Regarding the challenges for financing sustainable development, he considered the high levels of debt and financing costs of LDCs to be unsustainable, hindering their progress in achieving the 2030 Agenda.

He therefore called for the urgent creation of effective, efficient, equitable and comprehensive multilateral debt mechanisms to promote collective debt restructuring, an update of the principles of responsible borrowing and lending, including the existing structure of IMF charges and surcharges , on borrowing costs and debt burdens of developing countries and especially LDCs.
