Africa-Press – Angola. Around four tons of corn produced in the Nkiende prison unit, municipality of Mbanza Kongo, Zaire province, will begin to be harvested next Friday, as part of the 2023/2024 agricultural campaign.
The information was provided this Wednesday by the head of the inspection section of the Provincial Directorate of the Penitentiary Service of Zaire, chief prison inspector, Jorge Matumona Mabanza.
According to the source, as part of the 2023/2024 agricultural campaign, more than three hectares of land were prepared in that prison establishment, with the involvement of 120 inmates.
He said that, in addition to corn, sweet potatoes and cassava were cultivated, the soil preparation of which is done mechanized.
He added that agricultural production is one of the strategies of prison services throughout the national territory, with a view to improving the diet of the penal population.
“The practice of agriculture in the country’s penitentiary units, in addition to strengthening the diet of prisoners, also aims to fit inmates into socially useful activities”, he said.
Located 30 kilometers from the city of Mbanza Kongo, Nkiende prison currently houses more than 380 inmates.
