Africa-Press – Angola. Winning the gold medal in women’s handball, at the 13th edition of the African Games, held in Accra (Ghana), and at the Continental Wrestling Championship, in Cairo (Egypt), marked the sports week in the country.
In handball, the senior National Team beat its counterpart from the Democratic Republic of Congo, 33-15 (15-7), thus revalidating the title of the event, which ended on Saturday.
In Accra, Angola won, however, other medals, including gold, silver and bronze, in judo, chess, swimming and Greco-Roman wrestling.
Regarding the fights, the Angolan team, both sexes, returned to the country with nine medals won at the African Championship, held in Alexandria.
With a group of 17 fighters, the gold medal was won in the 65kg category, by Manaceu NGonda, while the three silver medals went to Josette Mavungo (69kg), Makaya Katendi (51kg) and Roberto Nsangua (86kg).
The bronze medals were won by Bofenda David (55kg), Francisco Kadima (77kg), Miguel Vata (61kg), Sofia Vemba (65kg) and Makaya Katendi (51kg).
Also noteworthy was Angola’s 0-1 defeat to Morocco, with an own goal from central David Carmo, in the 71st minute, in a FIFA game, played at the Agadir Stadium, with more than 40 thousand spectators.
The Palancas Negras, the name of the team, will play again on Monday, with the Comoros Islands, in the second FIFA friendly match of the date, also taking place on Moroccan soil, starting at 10pm.
The first round of the National Football Championship (Girabola2023/24) ended, in Cabinda, with a draw between local Sporting and Académica do Lobito, 1-1, in a match of the 14th round, played at the Tafe Stadium.
With this result, with goals scored by Pedro (27′) and Nelo (68′), the team from the northernmost province of the country rises to 12th place, with 12 points, and Académicos de Benguela are 10th/16th.
The competition is led by Petro de Luanda, with 34 points, followed by Desportivo da Lunda Sul (2nd/33) and Sagrada Esperança da Lunda Norte (3rd/31). Recreativo do Libolo do Cuanza Sul is in last place (15th/9).
In the last seven days, the withdrawal of General Carlos Hendrick, leader of list C, in the race for the presidency of the Clube Desportivo 1o de Agosto, whose election for the four-year period 2024-28, takes place on the 30th of this month, was also highlighted.
Speaking to the press, the head of the campaign, also general João Pereira Massano, stated that the decision is consensual within the group.
This fact limits the dispute to two competitors, namely general Gouveia de Sá Miranda, candidate on List B and jurist Egas Viegas, leader of list A.
Basketball also made an impact, with Petro de Luanda and Interclube qualifying for the Angola Cup final, beating Casa Pessoal do Porto do Lobito and 1o de Agosto, respectively, in the semi-finals.
In the last match, the team from the province of Benguela staged the big surprise of the semi-finals, beating Petro, by 77-74, but insufficient to guarantee the pass, due to the previous defeat (73-118).
Petro, who ended their contractual relationship with Brazilian coach José Neto, will face, next Saturday, in Benguela, Interclube in the final of this competition, after the “police” defeated 1o de Agosto in the other semi-final game, by 84-81.
The oil formation, national champion, is being provisionally guided by the pair of assistants, Raúl Duarte and Victor de Carvalho.
Still from the sport, former player Afonso Silva “Ti Fon” died, Sunday, as confirmed in Luanda, by a family source.
The former winger was found dead in his residence in the São Paulo neighborhood, urban district of Sambizanga, Municipality of Luanda.
Ti Fon was a reference player in the 90s and 2000s, in the clubs he represented as well as in the National Team in the African Championships, World Championships and Olympic Games.
