CEAST defends dialogue to solidify peace

Africa-Press – Angola. The president of the Episcopal Conference of Angola and São Tomé (CEAST), Dom Manuel Imbamba, defended, this Monday, in Luanda, a permanent dialogue between politicians, for the edification of the country and solidification of the achievements achieved with peace.

“We are experiencing a political environment that demonstrates a certain nervousness and that requires intervention from the church to establish a basis for dialogue between politicians, with a view to developing joint education actions for peace and citizenship, as well as a place where everyone Angolans feel good”, he stated.

Speaking to the press, after an audience with the president of the National Assembly, Carolina Cerqueira, the archbishop of Saurimo stated that the current political environment “reveals some friction, a certain nervousness, marked by the inappropriate use of some language that does not help to create a feeling of social peace and acceptance that helps to work towards the conscious citizenship that we desire”.

On the other hand, Dom Manuel Imbamba reaffirmed, on behalf of the Catholic Church, full support for the Executive in favor of the development of the community.

He also expressed the church’s willingness to continue working with the Executive, within the scope of the Framework Agreement initialed between the Angolan Government and the Holy See.

For the president of CEAST, it is through dialogue, the search for consensus, intelligent coexistence and political will that Angolans will be able to achieve their desired objectives.

Angola and the Holy See signed, on September 13, 2019, at the Vatican, a Framework Agreement that provides for the recognition of the legal personality of the Catholic Church in the country and the ownership of its properties.

The objective is for all Catholic institutions in the country, such as dioceses, religious congregations and schools, to be recognized by the Angolan State.

CEAST, which is the assembly of Catholic bishops of Angola and São Tomé, has its headquarters in Luanda.
