Africa-Press – Angola. Angola and the Republic of Congo discussed the strengthening of bilateral relations, with emphasis on cooperation in the area of border delimitation. The meeting was held between the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and the Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of the Republic of Congo in Angola, Mboungou Marou Virginie.
According to a note sent Online, during the meeting, Esmeralda Mendonça highlighted the commitment of the Angolan Government to maritime issues treated based on technical criteria and in accordance with International Law, a subject already discussed within the scope of the Meetings of the Joint Technical Subcommittee on the matter.As a sign of this commitment, the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs handed over a set of historical documents to the Congolese diplomat, containing relevant information on the border landmarks between Angola and Congo Brazzaville.
These documents constitute technical instruments that may assist in the next phase of the delimitation process.
In turn, the Congolese diplomat stressed the importance of the cooperation between the two countries in this area.
Political and diplomatic relations between Angola and the Republic of Congo were formally established on 24 September 1976, when the two countries signed a Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation.
Since then, the two countries have maintained historic ties of friendship and solidarity, marked by bilateral cooperation that focuses on different areas, with a focus on diplomacy, social reintegration, the economy, and cultural aspects.
One of the current pillars of the relationship between Angola and the Republic of Congo is the joint exploration of energy resources in the cross-border maritime zone.
The two countries share the Lianzi oil field, located in Blocks 14 (Angola) and High Seas (Congo Brazzaville).
The delimitation of the maritime border has been the subject of technical meetings, to establish definitive agreements that respect international law and promote the necessary cooperation for the georeferencing of the starting points inherited from the colonial period.
