Africa-Press – Angola. The situation of the conflicts affecting the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Sudan, South Sudan and the Central African Republic (CAR), member states of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), was discussed on Wednesday in Luanda by the Angolan Head of State and President of the organization, João Lourenço, with the parliamentary leaders participating in the 15th Session of the Parliamentary Forum of the Region (FP-ICGLR). At the end of the meeting, the acting president of the ICGLR Parliamentarians, Nelly Mutti, informed journalists that the meeting with the Angolan statesman aimed to address the issues of security, violence and conflict in the region, especially that which persists in the East of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). “We believe it is prudent as parliamentarians to report to His Excellency the President of the Republic of Angola, who is also the President of the Summit of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region, and forward this report, as it outlines some recommendations that we present, which we believe are the best way in which we can deal with the insecurity crisis in our region, especially in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo,” he said. For the parliamentarians, the Zambian leader stressed that peace in the region is of great importance, advocating the need to work together to maintain stability, bringing the warring parties to the negotiating table so that they can reach an understanding.
Nelly Mutti also defended, like President João Lourenço, the need for the Member States to find African solutions, but above all, that “no one should be left out” or wait for others to come and solve Africa’s problems.
“We are brothers and sisters and we must work together. The only thing that separates us are the artificial borders set up by the colonialists, which, in my opinion, we seem to respect more than anything else. But we, as brothers, are condemned to live in harmony, to live together and in peace”, added the acting president of the ICGLR Parliaments.
The parliamentary leader also highlighted the theme defended by the Plenary Assembly of the Great Lakes Region, which is related to inclusion, emphasizing that the decision for parliaments to be inclusive aims to ensure that there is gender representation in decision-making positions.“I must emphasize here that I also received the testimony of a colleague, at the time the president of the Parliament of the Republic of South Sudan, and I also hope to hand over the presidency to my sister, the president of the National Assembly of the Republic of Angola, Dr. Carolina Cerqueira,” she announced, highlighting that the fact that a woman handed over the presidency of the organization to another woman is a sign that “we are doing something towards inclusion.”
