International Master (IM) David Silva, an individual chess player, and Felícia Felicidade, from Macovi do Uíge, were the big winners of the Minas Gerais Cup, with 5.5 points each. The two competitions were held from the 17th to the 27th of this month, in the decompression room of the Ministry of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas (Mirempet).With four wins and three draws, David secured his third consecutive trophy in tournaments held this season, the Sonangol 49 Years Closed Chess Tournament (February), the 1st edition of the “Newgom Zango” tournament (first half of April) and lastly the Taça Mineiro (played from the 17th to the 27th of this month).

The victories were obtained in the matches against Júlio Miguel (from Macovi Sport Club), Luther Santos (from Giga), Fide Master (MF) Manuel Alberto (individual athlete) and International Master (IM) Luciano Oliveira (from 1.o de Agosto). The draws were forced by Alexandre Prospero (from Ditrov Chess School), MF Domingos Júnior (from Macovi Sport Club) and Candidate Master (CM) João Simões (from 1.o de Agosto).

The final classification was as follows: IM David Silva (5.5), CM João Simões (5), Vanderson Dias (5), MF Manuel Alberto (4.5), IM Luciano Oliveira (4.5), MF Domingos Júnior (4), Alexandre Prospero (3.5), Júlio Miguel (3.5), Lulceni Mendes (3.5) and CM Jaime Sonhy (3 points).

In the women’s category, the brilliant achievement of the player from Macovi do Uíge, with an elo of 1742 points and aged 17, was achieved with five wins, one draw and one withdrawal. The defeated athletes are as follows: Dádiva Almeida (from Roque Mate), IM Esperança Caxita (from 1.o de Agosto), Domingas Fernandes (from 1.o de Agosto), MF Luzia Pires (from 1.o de Agosto) and Luísa Cassanza (from the Ditrov Chess School).
