PHA Confirms Bela Malaquias Removal and Vice-President'S Remarks

Africa-Press – Angola. The Political Commission of the Humanist Party of Angola (PHA) yesterday reaffirmed the suspension of the party’s president, Florbela Malaquias, for alleged harmful management, and downplayed the statements also made yesterday by Roque Sozinho, who publicly presented himself as vice-president of the political formation.

In statements to this newspaper, members of the party’s deliberative body clarified that Roque Sozinho is merely a member of the national board and does not have the legitimacy to speak on behalf of the PHA, much less on strategic matters such as party leadership.

The PHA structure points to Ivo Ginguna as the true vice-president for Parliamentary and Electoral Affairs, elected at the organization’s first and only convention

The PHA structure appoints Ivo Ginguna as the true vice-president for Parliamentary and Electoral Affairs, elected at the organization’s first and only convention. The reaction follows a press conference called by Roque Sozinho and other members, in which he publicly “denied” Florbela Malaquias’ suspension and stated that the PHA leader is and will remain at the helm of the party until the next convention.

“The attempt to override the Political Committee’s decision has no statutory basis,” says the National Political Committee, represented by Nsimba Liuwawa. The body reiterates that Florbela Malaquias’ suspension was decided at a meeting held on July 7th and aims to allow the opening of an investigation to assess whether there are grounds for initiating disciplinary proceedings. Regarding the claim that the Constitutional Court would authorize the party convention, the members of the Political Committee categorically deny this.

“The convention will be held under the party’s responsibility, as soon as the current internal disagreements are resolved,” they guarantee. The leaders also add that Florbela Malaquias’s failure to attend the conference called by Roque Sozinho and his colleagues can be interpreted as a sign of respect for the decision that temporarily suspended her from the presidency.

The PHA is thus experiencing one of the most delicate moments in its short history as a legalized political entity, and faces a difficult test of internal cohesion and democratic maturity as it approaches its next national convention.
