Africa-Press – Angola. The Speaker of the National Assembly, Carolina Cerqueira, will participate in the 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliaments in Geneva, Switzerland, from July 29 to 30.

Prior to the meeting of parliamentary leaders, the fifth meeting of the Preparatory Committee will take place. Cerqueira will participate in the Preparatory Committee as a representative of the African Group, alongside her counterparts from Côte d’Ivoire, Tanzania, Zambia, Algeria, and Nigeria.

Established in 2000 on the eve of the United Nations Millennium Summit, the World Conference of Speakers of Parliaments has become a unique forum for high-level participation and dialogue among parliamentary leaders worldwide.

Previous conferences, held every five years since then, have served as catalysts for shaping and strengthening the parliamentary dimension of global governance. This helps to close the democratic gap in international affairs.

The 6th World Conference is the result of two years of work by a Preparatory Committee of approximately 20 Speakers of Parliament from all regions of the world. It promises to be the largest meeting of its kind ever held.

In keeping with the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s (IPU) inclusive approach, the conference will also feature prominent leaders from other international organizations, academia, civil society organizations, and the media.

The IPU initiated the event in close collaboration with the United Nations.

Founded in 1889, the IPU is one of the world’s oldest political organizations and currently has over 46,000 members from 179 parliaments working to promote peace and democracy.
