Foreign Minister Téte António Discusses DRC Issues with UN Envoy

Africa-Press – Angola. The minister of Foreign Affairs, Téte António, met on Thursday (28) in Luanda with the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the Great Lakes Region, Huang Xia, during which they discussed the peace mediation process in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

The meeting allowed the two personalities to analyze ongoing efforts, currently led by Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, President of Togo, recently appointed by the African Union as mediator of the conflict.

During the meeting, Huang Xia congratulated President João Lourenço for his leadership as Chairman of the African Union and highlighted Angola’s efforts in mediating the conflict in eastern DRC, as well as in resolving other crises affecting the Great Lakes Region.

The UN special envoy also consulted the Angolan authorities on the architecture of the peace process established by the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), as part of monitoring the situation in Congolese territory.

Téte António provided the diplomat with an update on ongoing initiatives, particularly the efforts of Togolese President Faure Gnassingbé, and summarized the conclusions of the Extraordinary Joint Summit of Heads of State and Government of the EAC and SADC, held on the 13th of the current month, aimed at restoring peace and stability in DRC.

The meeting resulted in the creation of a Panel of Facilitators, composed of five former African Heads of State, namely Mokgweetsi Masisi (Botswana), Olusegun Obasanjo (Nigeria), Uhuru Kenyatta (Kenya), Catherine Samba-Panza (Central African Republic), and Sahle-Work Zewde (Ethiopia).

The mandate of this Panel is to guide diplomatic efforts within the framework of the SADC-EAC unified initiative, consolidating the Nairobi and Luanda processes, with a view to achieving a comprehensive, fair, and sustainable solution to the conflict in eastern DRC.

On the occasion, Huang Xia also congratulated Angola on winning the African Nations Basketball Championship (Afrobasket 2025), considering the victory a reflection of the country’s investment in sports and youth, as well as its international portrait.

Huang Xia has served as the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the Great Lakes Region since 2019. A diplomat with over 30 years of experience, he served as China’s ambassador to Niger, Senegal, and Congo, specializing in peacebuilding and conflict resolution.
